RONALD GRIEVE LECTURE AND PRESIDENT’S RECEPTION
PRIVATE VISIT TO THE PRADO
Delegates and partners are invited to a private evening at the Museo del Prado, across the Paseo del Prado from the conference hotel. Established in 1819 as a public gallery and based on the former Spanish Royal Collection, it features some of the world’s finest examples of European art from the 12th to the early 19th centuries, and is unquestionably the world’s finest single collection of Spanish art. The Prado is one of the most visited sites in the world, ranking among the world’s greatest museums. On arrival, private guides will escort delegates in small groups and describe in detail a select few of the masterpieces of the collection, which includes numerous works by Goya and Velazquez, as well as by Titian, Rubens and Hieronymus Bosch. The best-known work on display at the museum is Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez, Spain's greatest artistic genius. The tours will be followed by a reception in one of the museum's galleries.
We will enjoy the traditional closing dinner and musical entertainment at the Circulo de Bellas Artes, the historic not-for-profit multicultural arts centre, which has played an important role in the artistic life of Madrid since 1880. The Circulo features daily performances of the visual arts, music, film, drama, literature, science, philosophy and poetry: it is housed in a magnificent emblematic building designed by the architect Antonio Palacios in 1926, located at the foot of Madrid’s famous Gran Via.
